How can corporate health insurance help prevent serious illnesses?

In Hungary, the leading causes of death are serious illnesses, which temporal detection can even significantly improve the chances of recovery and maintenance, but regular examinations and, in case of complaints, immediate, comprehensive examinations are essential. As part of the health insurance packages provided by Medicover, employers have the opportunity to maintain the health of their employees and diagnose diseases in a timely manner with a variety of specialist, laboratory and diagnostic examinations.

The most common serious, fatal diseases in Hungary

Serious illnesses often have no symptoms or appear too late. This is one of the reasons why it is important to participate in regular examinations or to see a specialist immediately in case of a complaint.

Serious or even fatal diseases include, for example, blood vessel stenosis, hypertension, diabetes, cervical cancer, and colon cancer.

The data of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (CSO) show that the most common causes of death in Hungary are malignancies, ischemic heart disease (narrowing of the coronary arteries of the heart, which causes inadequate blood supply to the heart), cerebrovascular disease, lung diseases; and acute myocardial infarction, and last but not least, liver diseases.

Although the number of deaths has fallen markedly over the last thirty years (compared to 145 660 people in 1990, 129 603 have lost their lives in 2019), the number of deaths due to various diseases is increasing, with the exception of cerebrovascular and liver diseases.

In the case of middle-aged women, the most common causes of death include tumorous diseases, such as breast cancer and cervical cancer, approximately 2 000 women die of the former illness in Hungary each year. According to a Eurostat survey, in 2016, every 100 000 women in Hungary died of cervical cancer in 6.8 cases and of uterine cancer 7.5 times.

In the same age group, gastrointestinal diseases, such as cirrhosis, are the most common cause of death among men, while in those over 65 years, diseases of the cardiovascular system in both sexes. The previously mentioned Eurostat data also reveal that the number of deaths of lung cancer and colon cancer in Hungary in 2016 was above the EU standard average.

Statistics published by the CSO also show that the number of deaths increases for men over the age of 40 and for women from the age of 50, therefore participation in annual screening tests is particularly important.

The mortality rate in case of cancerous, liver, and cardiovascular disease can be significantly reduced if they are detected and treated in time. For this, regular examinations are essential, and in case of a complaint, the examination must be carried out immediately, quickly and professionally. Medicover Health Insurance can help you with this.

How can Medicover Health Insurance help?

Medicover’s group Health Insurance helps businesses by providing White, Blue and Gold insurance packages with a wide range of unlimited outpatient and laboratory services that complement standard (e.g. X-ray, ultrasound, ECG, Holter) and comprehensive diagnostic (e.g. CT, MRI, visual field test) examinations, so that health problems and serious diseases can be recognized in time and treated professionally, if we consult a specialist as soon as the first symptom appears.

Medicover conducted an internal survey to find out the actual health condition of its patients. The result was surprising and enlightening, as a significant proportion of insured employees arriving asymptomatic and without complaints already had an illness of which they were unaware, and could have become severe if not diagnosed in time. Examples of such typical diseases are hypertension, various dermatological or rheumatological diseases.

This also shows how important it is to participate in regular examinations.

Medicover helps with its annual, individualized preventive screening, which includes comprehensive laboratory tests and gynaecological screening. Laboratory tests include, but are not limited to:

cholesterol (HDL, LDL, and total cholesterol) and triglyceride levels, which play roles in fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Analysis of these elements is important because high cholesterol levels may increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
Bilirubin, GOT, and GPT values, among others, provide information for the diagnosis of liver damage.
For men aged 40 and older, PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels can also be measured, which plays an important role in diagnosing prostate cancer.
Women have the opportunity for cancer screening (bimanual examination, colposcopy, cytology, physical breast examination) and mammography at the age of 40 years, which is combined with a gynaecological examination.

Within the framework of each package, in case of a complaint, it is also possible to perform various ECG examinations (rest, stress, Holter), with the help of which various cardiovascular diseases can be screened even in time. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy, which are included in the insurance, are the most appropriate diagnostic procedures for the detection of polyps and tumours in the stomach and colon. Faecal blood analysis, in case of a complaint, is the most widely used test for colon cancer screening.

Furthermore, it is possible to test different tumour and cancer markers, but only in highly warranted cases.

In addition to diagnosing serious, even terminal illnesses, corporate insurance packages also offer employers the advantage that health insurance is a more preferential-taxed fringe benefit than other employer benefits.

Another advantage is that the reduction of sick days does not lead to additional costs, efficiency losses in companies, and that it provides security for employees (and, in the case of family extension, children, spouses and life partners) to access professional medical care easily and quickly. These benefits strengthen the employee’s commitment, loyalty, and increase the overall competitiveness of the company.
