Breast MRI examination

MRI examination is most often used to examine existing tumors in the breast, which have already been diagnosed with ultrasound and mammography. It is not recommended to use this diagnostic method for screening, as the type of lesion is more difficult to identify with breast MRI examination than with other diagnostic procedures.

It is excellent for locating possible lymph node metastases and for ruling out or proving possible damage to breast implants.

How to prepare for the breast MRI examination?

Before the MRI examination, it is always recommended to consult a doctor about the details, because in the case of breast MR, a native and contrast-enhanced image is taken every time.

Breast MRI is recommended to be performed between days 5 and 15 of the menstrual cycle due to hormonal changes in the body.

It is important to know that due to the strong magnetic field, it is forbidden to bring any device or object containing metal into the examination room.

How breast MRI examination is performed?

Breast MRI is performed lying on the abdomen without squeezing the breasts, so it is painless. The machine is noisy, the intensity of the noise can be reduced by using earplugs. You must remain still during the examination.

In which case is it not recommended to perform the examination?

If there is any magnetically responsive material in your body, such as a prosthesis, nail, screw, metal valve, pacemaker, tourniquet, implant, etc. These can move out of place during the examination and cause serious injury. Furthermore, the study can become invaluable.
Nowadays, after surgeries, patients receive a document as to whether their implant is MR compatible or not. Please bring this document with you to the examination.
The Medicover MR device is a closed device, so the patient may feel closed inside it. This may be somewhat mitigated by the larger 70-centimeter inside diameter. In case the patient is prone to claustrophobia, the examination may be difficult to perform.

Does it have any side effects?

Breast MRI has no side effects. If a contrast agent examination is carried out, the contrast agent may cause an allergic reaction. In the case of pre-existing known allergies, Medicover doesn’t perform examinations with contrast agent.

When will your results arrive?

The completed recording will be reviewed by a radiologist and the result will be available in our online system after 3 workdays.
