Obesity

Obesity

Overweight is a health problem that affects more than a quarter of the World’s population. Morbid obesity can lead to serious circulatory diseases and premature death.

What is obesity?

Obesity occurs, when the body weight is 20% more than the ideal. The significantly increased body fat percentage is accompanied by a high body mass index (above 28-30 kg/m2).

What is body mass index (BMI)?

BMI shows the physical condition (normal, overweight, obese, severely obese, morbidly obese) of a person.

How can I calculate my body mass index?

The body mass index is calculated based on the following formula: Bodyweight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared

Körte, homokóra, alma testalkat

What are the causes of obesity?

  • Genetic predisposition: Certain genetic traits inherited from parents, can make it more difficult to lose weight, but this is not the main obstacle. Healthy nutrition and regular exercise is the key to weight loss.
  • Psychic factors: Excessive food intake is often a result of an abnormal psychic condition (stress, boredom, anger, abnormal mood swings)
  • Environmental impacts: Cultural -, family -, and other social conditions also have an impact on our eating habits.
  • Organic disorders: Obesity or morbid obesity can be a consequence of certain diseases like thyroid dysfunction or central nervous system disease.
  • Poor nutrition: Inadequate diet (excessive consumption of carbohydrates and sugary food) and irregular eating is a direct way to obesity.
  • Lack of physical activity: If there is no physical activity just calorie intake, the extra energy is stored by the body as fat.
  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, as part of the natural process the average pregnant woman needs 300 calories more per day then she did before pregnancy.

What are the symptoms of obesity?

Obesity causes physical symptoms such as fat deposits on the abdomen and buttocks.

  • Apple shaped obesity: Fat deposits on the abdomen, breast, neck and face
  • Pear shaped obesity: Fat deposits on the lower abdomen, buttocks and thighs

How can I lose weight?

The most important rules of diet

  • Daily regular exercises (minimum 30 minutes per day)
  • Eating healthy foods that are rich in vitamins, fibres and minerals by optimizing calorie intake
  • Abundant fluid intake (mainly water)

It is very important to emphasize that starving itself is not the right method, because in this case the muscle wasting process will start immediately, instead of fat reducing.
