High Cholesterol

When can we talk about high cholesterol level?

Lack of exercises, stressful lifestyle, increased environmental harm and poor nutrition have all contributed to the emergence of so-called civilized population diseases. In addition to diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis, hypercholesterolemia, with other words high cholesterol, is a significant risk factor when it comes to the preservation of our health.

Cholesterol provides energy, serves as a nutrient for the function of certain cells, as well as certain component of hormones, vitamins and bile acids. It is a „fat-like” substance that is indispensable in the body as it provides vital functions. However, the increase in cholesterol levels in our blood causes a serious risk: it causes severe cardiovascular problems, may trigger atherosclerosis, thereby increasing the risk of heart or cerebral infarction.

What causes high cholesterol level?

In Western countries, high blood cholesterol levels are expected for every second person older than 40 years old. The most common causes include genetic predisposition, certain metabolic disorders (e.g., thyroid dysfunction), and most of all the improper, sedentary-lifestyle and poor nutrition.

What are the typical symptoms of high cholesterol level?

For a long time, high cholesterol level is asymptomatic, yet there are some signs we must pay great attention. Chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat may indicate cardiovascular disease, which can be caused by high cholesterol level. Chest pain can develop due to poor blood supply to the heart. A typical symptom is the tiny fat nodules around the eye, „yellow spots”.

How high cholesterol level can be treated?

Cholesterol level can be restored with complete lifestyle change, exercise and diet. Reduce the intake of animal origin food, eat high fibre food and increase the amount of fruits and vegetables. Choose low fat milk products. In addition to the diet, we have to do exercises 3-4 times a week, at least half an hour a day.
