Paranasal sinus CT scan

The purpose of the CT scan is to detect possible inflammatory or other processes in the paranasal sinuses (maxillary sinus and frontal sinus). CT scan of the paranasal sinuses shows any swelling, polyps and tumours that may have formed on the surface of the sinuses.

This examination is most often performed on the recommendation of an otolaryngologist, e.g. in case of nasal septum surgery – respiratory stenosis surgery (septoplasty).

What kind of preparation is required?

It is always necessary to consult a doctor before the CT scan, because due to the radiation exposure, the CT scan can only be performed on the basis of a medical recommendation.

Native CT examination does not require special preparation. Contrast agent is very rarely given to the patient during a CT scan of the paranasal sinuses, however, it is recommended that you do not eat food for 6 hours before the scan.

Anyone who comes for a scan with contrast agent is not allowed to eat for six hours before the examination!

Prior to a CT scan with contrast agent, metformin medications for diabetes should be discontinued for 48 hours prior to the examination and resumed 48 hours afterwards.

How is the paranasal sinus CT scan performed?

The CT device resembles a large, thick ring, the bottom of which the patient rests motionless on the table while the images are being taken. The device makes a humming sound during operation, but there is no need to be afraid of this. The scan is performed at the height of the nose and the maxillary and frontal sinuses. In case of native recording, one series of images is taken, and in case of a scan with contrast agent, two series of images are taken – one after the native scan and one after the administration of the contrast agent.

When can the examination not be performed?

All CT scans are performed using x-rays, therefore this examination is also contraindicated during pregnancy because it can be dangerous to the unborn child.

Very rarely, we examine pregnant women only with a doctor’s professional indication (and after a certain week of pregnancy). There are no side effects from the paranasal sinus CT scan, the contrast agent can very rarely cause a reaction, but if you are allergic to it, we will not perform the examination!

When is the result expected?

The completed recording will be reviewed by the radiologist and the result will be available in our online system after 3 working days.
