Special allergy LTT test for dental metals, ceramics, and cement

The special allergy LTT test for dental metals, ceramics, and cement is only available at Medicover Hospital and sampling is only possible on Tuesday mornings.

Sealants used in root canal treatment, such as metals, ceramics, and cement, can be potential allergens. These materials used in dentistry, with few exceptions, all cause type IV hypersensitivity (delayed-type allergy), with T-cell activation leading to local or, in severe cases, systemic inflammatory reactions.

You may suspect an allergy caused by dental treatment materials if you have the following symptoms:

  • Rashes on the face and mouth
  • Gingivitis (periodontitis)
  • Rashes on any part of the body
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep problems
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Headaches, migraines
  • Some autoimmune symptoms

During LTT, the following allergens are tested: vanadium, cobalt, silicon, manganese, aluminum, chromium, cerium, antimony, cement (Ketac-Cem), titanium, barium, boron, phosphate cement (Fuji-Plus).

A positive reaction is a type IV hypersensitivity to the allergen in question. Substances containing this allergen should then be avoided. Where the allergen causing hypersensitivity has been previously inserted, the risk of removal and replacement should be weighed against the expected gain with the assistance of an appropriate professional.

The test is performed on blood.
